Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - 2003, (California)
One of California’s most northerly wine regions, the Alexander Valley has always had a strong reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon. The namesake winery lives up to that reputation; their Cabernet is wonderfully aromatic, with touches of blackberry, cedar, clove, and blackcurrant. It’s medium-bodied, with relatively light tannins, making for a clean, enjoyable finish.
Abundance Vineyards Abundantly Rich Red Wine - 2004, (California)
The Mencarini family has been part of the California wine scene for decades, growing grapes in their own vineyards and developing strong relationships with other growers throughout the state. Their Abundance Vineyards Abundantly Rich Red comes from their own property in Lodi; it’s 68% Zinfandel, the difference being filled out with Carignan. To call it Zinfandel on the bottle the percentage would have to be upped to at least 75%, but the wine has a classic Zin profile nonetheless: full and rich, with lots of dark fruit aromas, a touch of raspberries and spice, and light tannins.
Finca El Retiro Syrah - 2004, (Argentina)
Argentina built its reputation on Malbec, but lately the land of the tango has shown it’s no one-hit wonder with some other varietals, and Syrah seems to be leading the way. The Finca el Retiro shows why: lots of dark fruit aromas balanced by touches of spice, coffee, and chocolate. It’s full-bodied, with lots of intensity and focus.
Andretti Selections Chardonnay - 2004, (California)
Mario Andretti’s Italian roots come out in this food-friendly take on California Chardonnay. An appreciation for good wine sparked the former race-car champion’s interest in owning a winery about ten years ago, and from a base in Napa he and his partners have gone on to make wine from vineyards across the state. The light golden color tells you that this is no over-oaked monster, and the nose and mouth agree: peaches and cream. It’s medium-to-full bodied, with mild acidity - a gentle wine.

A few years ago Australian vintners were among the first to realize that big, buttery, and oaky wasn’t the only way to make a Chardonnay, and some producers pulled back the curtain of oak-derived flavors and textures so the flavor of the fruit could shine through on its own. In the Bush Bike that means aromas of peach, lemon, and fig; it’s medium-bodied, with a soft texture and a smooth, fruity finish.
